The Process:
We make many different things out of fused
glass. The process starts with combining different colored pieces of glass
by heating them in our kilns to around 1500 degrees. This fuses
them into one piece. Then we anneal by cooling the glass slowly to relieve the stress. The whole process takes
from 3 to 24
hours depending on the size and thickness of the glass. We also add a special glass, Dicroic
glass, that has the capabilities to give off two
different colors - depending on which way the light travels through it.
At this point we will saw the glass into shapes we want. We then refire
the glass to 1400 degrees, just below the temperature where the glass turns to liquid.
This gives the piece a nice rounded edge. A majority of our pieces are then
wire wrapped with either copper or silver. More at bottom of this
page. Thanks - Cindy and Clark

The Artists:
Clark and Cindy Summers create all the pieces of glass in their small
studio in Hayden Lake, Idaho. Great care is taken in getting the colors in
the glass by fusing many small colored pieces together into a large slab.
This process takes 12 to 16 hours heating the glass to 1500 degrees and them
slowly cooling to keep the glass from getting brittle. At this point we now
cut or saw the slab into the shapes we are creating. Depending on what we
are creating we will heat the glass one more time to round the edges . We
make things from large masks to small ornaments, jewelry, plates and sun
catchers and are always coming up with new ideas for pieces to make. We want
our work to be enjoyed by all - for it comes from our hearts.
