Art Walk starts for 2009!

April  10th

Northwest Artists Cooperative will feature through the month of April the works of Post Falls Batik artist Toni Spencer
and Spokane Pottery artist Hilda  Bradshaw. Artist reception Friday April 10th from 5 to 8 pm.

Toni Spencer experimented with many different art forms before she took a Batik class at the Kodiak ,Alaska Community College in 1981.
She fell in love with the complexities and yet simplicity of Batik and it became her primary focus. She draws from everyday subjects that capture her heart and eye and strives to capture the fun of life with bright colors and the typical batik ''crackle". Spencer moved to Northern Idaho in 2001. And many of her latest batiks feature the Ponderosa and Idaho wild life. Some of her batiks in 2008 feature embroidered metallic threads to embellish certain areas and bring even more sparkle to the pieces and with some she created a miniature crazy quilt to go with the batik.

Hilda Bradshaw has been showing her Raku and Pottery at Northwest Artists for over 11 years. Her Raku fish and bowls are always drawing compliments.
Besides selling her work at the shop she teaches classes and Workshops in Spokane and is a member of the Spokane Potter's Guild.

May's 8th

Northwest Artists Cooperative will feature the unique 2D work of Patti Hutchens Jouppi of Spokane through the month of May.
Patti has spent most of her life in Alaska, Washington and Hawaii and this is reflected in the subject matter which inevitably deals with the wild life she loves, especially sea turtles and pacific mythology.  She is a member of the Sea Turtle Trust and gives a portion of all the sales of her turtle prints to the trust which helps turtle endeavors around the world. Jouppi also does stone and wood sculptures using recycled materials. Artist's Reception 5 to 8pm Friday May 8th.

Artist Shirley Erlandsen is always exploring new watercolor techniques in her work. July
Rick Barlow's  photography  and Vern Judkins' unique wood work will be featured through the month of July.
Artist's reception to be held on Friday July 11th from 5 pm to 8 pm.

Rick Barlow"s  photography show "Orni-Vita"  (literally translated; bird-life)  A collection of various bird portraits and candid compositions.
As gift under the Christmas tree in 1967, Rick's first camera was a
Kodak Instamatic-104.  Rick's gear and the vision have matured somewhat;  His drive to satisfy our need for reflection, connection, and discovery, remains.  Twenty rewarding years have been spent searching canyons, mountains, and communities of the West for moving moments that fit these needs.  Rick's work has received many awards at local shows over the years.  Most recently he has had images displayed in juried shows at Spokane City Hall and in the Washington State Convention and Trade Center in Seattle.   He has been published in magazines, such as "Paddler", and in promotional brochures.
What Rick values most in his imaging is the use of photography to tell a story;  Most every image on show likely has several ‘companion’ images in his library.  These different shots compliment each other and work together to describe a geographic region, an ecosystem, a culture, or an activity.

Vern Judkins is a Northwest sculptor who transforms wood, silver and semi-precious stones into contemporary sculptural forms.

He was born and has spent most of his life in the Northwest and in 1973 earned a BFA from Washington State University.
His father gave him a Cub Scout knife when he was a child and he has whittled and carved wood ever since.  Over the years as he explored different forms, textures and colors, his functional wood pieces have transitioned from strictly utilitarian, to the more sculptural. The organic shapes of nature and the ancient Greek classic shapes are the main influences for his work. Inspiration from the wood itself often dictates the shape he will carve. Most of his pieces are made from local woods he finds or from family and local contacts.
His jewelry pieces are made using the lost wax process and like all of his wood pieces, are one of a kind.

These pieces have a very modern, clean look without the distraction of picture frames and they allow light to be an even more important element of the photographic imagery.
